Warriors Double-Digit Loss to Lakers Reveals Key Weakness
In the Golden State Warriors’ prime existence of the 2010s, Stephen Curry created costly mismatches, leading to a dynasty. However, on Saturday, one mismatch in particular destroyed the Warriors. The Warriors’ 118-108 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers revealed a key weakness.
Lakers Anthony Davis disrupted the Warriors, giving them their second consecutive victory over their Western Conference rival. Davis scored a game-high 36 points, dominating the Warriors with 13 rebounds, three steals, and one block.
The Warriors have produced better defenses in the past than their current 10th-best mark. However, due to their age, injuries, and personnel, they simply struggle to guard Davis.
In their two games during the 2024-25 season, Davis averaged 18 points, 7.5 rebounds, and two steals. However, the average is low because the Lakers center suffered an ankle sprain in the first quarter of their Christmas Day contest.
In addition to Davis’ 2024-25 averages vs. the Warriors, their 2023 postseason matchup showcased why the Curry-led team can’t beat the Lakers in a best-of-seven series.
Davis averaged 21.5 points, 14.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.2 blocks, and 1.5 steals, leading the Lakers to a 4-2 series victory over the Warriors.
While Davis hasn’t shot the long ball well against the Warriors in recent meetings, his paint presence and mid-range attack destroyed Golden State’s unathletic centers. Furthermore, Davis’ elite defense caused the Warriors’ 18th-ranked offensive rating to plummet.
Ultimately, until the Warriors acquire a legitimate center with athleticism and strength, they will continue to succumb to Davis’ beastly build.
