Football represented by trio of Longhorn Legends at Super Bowl LIX
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Football will be represented in the Super Bowl for the 19th time over the last 20 seasons as three former letterwinners are set to play in the game on Feb. 9. The trio includes Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu and wide receiver Xaver Worthy along with Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Moro Ojomo.
Super Bowl LIX will kick off at 5:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, Feb. 9, from inside the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The game will broadcast on FOX.
It marks the second-consecutive year in which multiple former Longhorns have participated in the Super Bowl. Last year, Omenihu and San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan clashed in Super Bowl LVIII.
Omenihu, a native of Rowlett, Texas, played in 51 career games with 33 starts and totaled 99 tackles (68 solo) with 29.5 tackles for loss and 17 sacks as a Longhorn. He also had 12 quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. The 2018 Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year and a first-team All-Big 12 honoree, Omenihu helped lead the Longhorns to a 10-4 record and a win in the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl over Georgia as a senior in 2018. He finished with 45 tackles and team highs in tackles for loss (18.0) and sacks (9.5), both marks the most for a Longhorn since 2013. Omenihu was selected by the Houston Texans with the 161st overall pick in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent two-plus seasons (2019-21) in Houston, then played one and half seasons with San Francisco (2021-22) before joining Kansas City prior to the 2023 season. He has made six tackles (four solo) and has registered one sack and a forced fumble this season.
Worthy, the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, appeared in and started 39 games for Texas. He ranks third in program history with 26 touchdown receptions, fourth all-time in career receiving yards (2,755), sixth in receptions (197) and eighth in punt return yards (564). A three-team All-Big 12 selection, he had a reception in 39 consecutive games, the third-longest streak in UT history. As a punt return specialist, Worthy had the second-best punt return average for a career (14.5) and season (16.9 in 2023) in program history. A native of Fresno, Calif., Worthy earned second-team All-America honors in 2023 as a punt returner from the Football Writers Association of America and The Sporting News, and as an all-purpose player by the American Football Coaches Association. He was named to the Associated Press All-America Third Team as an all-purpose player. In his rookie season with the Chiefs, Worthy has grabbed 59 receptions for 638 yards (10.8 ypc) and six touchdowns.
Ojomo was selected by the Eagles with the 249th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Katy, Texas, product played in 50 career games with 30 starts for the Longhorns. He totaled 95 tackles (50 solo), 13.5 tackles for loss and five sacks during his career. He added two passes defended, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. In 2022, he earned second-team All-Big 12 selection from the Associated Press after establishing career bests with 33 tackles (16 solo), 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and one forced fumble while adding two quarterback hurries. Ojomo was a four-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree and an eight-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. He heads into Sunday with 20 tackles (six solo) in 17 games this season.
