Georgia’s men’s basketball team was overwhelmed on the road, suffering a 90-69 defeat against Alabama.
The Georgia men’s basketball team dropped its fifth game in its last six outings on Saturday, falling to No.4 Alabama 90-69 at the Coleman Coliseum. The Crimson Tide shot a scorching 53% from the field as a team and had five players finish in double figures, led by guard Mark Sears who scored 20 points.
Georgia got off to a rough shooting start and couldn’t recover, going just 10-for-37 from the field in the first half on the way to a 39-28 halftime deficit. The Bulldogs made just one of their 10 3-point attempts in the half and seven of their 13 free throws. The second half wasn’t much better, and Georgia finished the game shooting 36% from the field and going four-of-23 from behind the arc.
Asa Newell led Georgia in scoring with 16 points on six-of-15 shooting, and also had a career-high five steals. RJ Godfrey was the only other Bulldog to crack double digits with 10 points.
One positive from Georgia’s performance was that it only turned the ball over six times, but Alabama won the rebounding advantage 52-36 despite Georgia pulling down 16 offensive rebounds to the Crimson Tide’s nine. The Bulldogs might not have made many careless mistakes with the ball, but struggles to score, rebound and defend ultimately did them in.
“For the most part, [we] made really good decisions, executed some stuff, got a lot of post touches, drew a lot of fouls,” head coach Mike White said. “That’s what we do as well as anyone in the league. Put pressure on the rim from our wings, from Silas [Demary Jr.] and from our bigs, but the empty possessions at the foul line continue to haunt us. We’re past not talking about it. I’m going to try through trial and error. We’re going to try something different and we’re just going to talk about it nonstop and we’ll see where it goes.”
Georgia now drops to 15-7 and 3-6 in the SEC. The Bulldogs will return to Athens to play LSU (12-9, 1-7 SEC) on Wednesday night in Stegeman Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. and the game will be televised on SEC Network.
