He played collegiate football at the University of Findlay as a defensive back and wide receiver from 1995 to 1998. His coaching career began at his alma mater, where he served as the wide receivers coach in 2000. He then held various coaching positions at Miami University (Ohio), Western Kentucky University, and Kent State University, focusing on wide receivers, linebackers, and special teams coordination.
Aukerman transitioned to the NFL in 2010, starting as a defensive assistant with the Denver Broncos. He subsequently joined the Jacksonville Jaguars, initially as a defensive assistant and later as an assistant special teams coordinator. In 2013, he moved to the San Diego Chargers, serving as an assistant special teams coach before being promoted to special teams coordinator in 2016.
