Corey Hetherman, appointed as the University of Miami’s defensive coordinator in January 2025, brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision for revitalizing the Hurricanes’ defense. His coaching philosophy emphasizes physicality, enthusiasm for the game, and a commitment to playing fast and smart.

Coaching Philosophy and Vision

Hetherman is determined to instill a culture of physicality and passion within the Miami defense. He envisions a team where players are eager to engage in all aspects of football, from practice to game day. He stated, “I want you to love football when you walk in the building… I want them to enjoy being here, and then when we play I want to be the most physical team.”

Central to his approach is the concept of swarming defense. Hetherman aims to have his players play fast, understand their roles, and execute with precision. He emphasized the importance of playing fast and swarming, stating, “We want to play fast we want to swarm… just want to line up… understand what your job is… and then go play fast.”

Coaching Experience and Achievements

Before joining Miami, Hetherman served as the defensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota in 2024, where he led a defense that ranked ninth nationally in points allowed per game (16.9) and fifth in total defense (285.7 yards per game).

Prior to Minnesota, Hetherman was the linebackers coach at Rutgers University from 2022 to 2023. Under his guidance, Rutgers’ defense improved significantly, allowing 46.7 fewer yards per game compared to the previous season and achieving its best total defense mark in a decade.

From 2019 to 2021, Hetherman served as the defensive coordinator at James Madison University, where his defense ranked in the top 10 nationally in both total and scoring defense each year. In 2021, he was named the AFCA FCS Assistant Coach of the Year after James Madison finished with the No. 2 defense in the nation.

Earlier in his career, Hetherman was the defensive coordinator at the University of Maine from 2016 to 2018, where he transformed the defense into a formidable unit, leading the league in several categories, including rushing defense.

Philosophy on Player Development

Hetherman emphasizes the importance of players enjoying the game and being excited to participate in all aspects of football. He believes that fostering a love for the game leads to improved performance and a stronger team dynamic. He stated, “I want you to love football when you walk in the building… I want them to enjoy being here.”

He also stresses the need for players to understand their roles and responsibilities, enabling them to play fast and with confidence. He mentioned, “I just want to line up… understand what your job is… and then go play fast.”

Impact on the Miami Hurricanes

Hetherman’s appointment is expected to bring a renewed sense of discipline and enthusiasm to the Miami defense. His track record of transforming defenses and his clear vision for the team suggest a promising future for the Hurricanes. Head coach Mario Cristobal highlighted Hetherman’s ability to develop physically and mentally tough units, stating, “They play really, really physical. They tackle really, really well. They certainly force a significant amount of turnovers, and they put pressure on the quarterback.”

With Hetherman’s leadership, the Miami Hurricanes are poised to embrace a defensive philosophy centered on physicality, speed, and a genuine love for the game, aiming to elevate the team’s performance and competitiveness in the upcoming seasons.
