Andy Reid feels like he’s in ‘Groundhog Day’ before Chiefs vs. Bills

The Kansas City Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, admits there is an element of de ja vu ahead of his clash with the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game on January 26, in the latest chapter of their compelling rivalry.

The 2024/25 NFL Playoffs will be the fourth time Patrick Mahomes has taken on Josh Allen since the Missouri-based franchise claimed their first championship in 2019, although the Chiefs generally do better.

Both sides also frequently meet in the regular season too, meaning the teams know each other very well and that was something the 66-year-old head coach was keen to point out as he chases another Super Bowl title.

“I feel like we play these guys all the time,” Reid told media, as per ESPN’s Michele Steele. “So they know us, we know them.”

Allen vs. Mahomes: Tale of the Tape

Intriguingly, Allen dominates Mahomes in the regular season and boasts a 4-1 record. However, in the playoffs the script is flipped and it’s the 29-year-old Chiefs‘ quarterback who is 3-0 up against the Californian.

Mahomes first eliminated his rival in the 2019/20 AFC Championship game, then the Divisional Round in 2021 and 2022. Now they meet again, with the Bills still chasing a first Super Bowl ring in franchise history.

Last time out, Allen survived a scare against Lamar Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens when Mark Andrews dropped the game-tying catch with two minutes left at the Highmark Stadium, as the Bills emerged 27-25 winners.

The 28-year-old passed for 3,731 yards and 28 touchdowns in the regular season, whilst adding 12 more rushing. In the NFL Playoffs, he currently ha 399 passing yards for two touchdowns, with an extra two rushing.
