Aged 17, Harry Kewell began his senior professional career at Leeds United, having joined from the youth ranks, winning the FA Youth Cup in 1996-97.
A winger/attacking midfielder, he played for Leeds between 1996 and 2003 and was named Leeds United Player of the Year as well as PFA Young Player of the Year in 1999-2000 and was nominated for the ballon d’Or in 2001.
Kewell attracted interest from several top European clubs like AC Milan, Man United, Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea but he finally ended up at Liverpool in 2003.
His first Liverpool goal came in the Merseyside derby in a 3-0 win.In 2005, Kewell became the first Australian to win the UCL (since the Champions League era) after Liverpool beat AC Milan on penalties in the final.
He started the match but was subbed off for Vladimรญr ล micer in the 23rd minute after he got injured.Kewell stayed at Liverpool until 2008, also winning the FA Cup in 2005-06.He next played for Galatassaray where he won the Turkish Super Cup, after which he played for Melbourne Victory, Al-Gharafa and Melbourne Hearts.
At international level, Kewell scored 17 goals in 58 appearances for Australia and featured in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, as well as the 2007 and 2011 AFC Asian Cups.Often considered “Australia’s finest football export,” he was named Australia’s greatest footballer in a vote by Australian fans, players and media in 2012.Kewell announced his retirement from professional football in March 2014 and is currently a first-team coach at Celtic.
